Neath Arts Festival

Events based in venues in the town of Neath will include Art exhibitions by two of Neath's most well-known artists, Will Roberts and Andrew Vicari, with art masterclasses, over the five-day festival, demonstrated and delivered by local Welsh artists. Discover and learn about the beauty of the stained glass in one of Neath's hidden treasures, St. Thomas' church. View art produced by local art groups. Submit your own work in the Call for Art based on The Wizard of Oz and 'There's No Place Like Home'.

Based on the same theme of ‘belonging’ or ‘cynefin’, listen to Welsh authors and poets talk about their love-hate relationship with their own home towns and what they mean to them. Enjoy the wealth of stories, rugby or otherwise, TV and Radio presenter Alun Wyn Bevan will be sharing. Remind yourself of some of your favourite 100 Welsh tunes, when TV presenter and Radio DJ Huw Stephens discusses his new book and analyses the highlights of the careers of the most important recording artists that Wales has ever produced, singing in English or Welsh - favourites such as Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Dafydd Iwan, Max Boyce, Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals, and Adwaith.

Let your children look forward to readings and activities organised in conjunction with festival partner, Neath Port Talbot Library Service, with a pre-school art and craft session in Welsh, delivered by Menter Iaith.

Musical events include performances by a string quartet, brass quintet, mixed and male voice choirs, local bands playing 60s favourites and traditional and current Welsh music.

We look forward to seeing you at the festival!

Will Roberts was one of the leading Welsh artists of the 20th century. With his friend and fellow artist Kyffin Williams, his works dominated the art scene from the 1950s until his death in 2000. His well-known charcoal drawings can be seen in St. David’s Church, Neath, where he lived most of his life. He was known and loved by everyone in the town.

One of Wales's most exciting folk acts brings their unique, contemporary take to traditional tunes. A lively and enjoyable night blends a live pub session with polished musicianship.

Two-time winners of Best Album at the Welsh Folk Awards (debut album Tŷ Ein Tadau (2019) and 2022's islais a genir), VRï are Jordan Price Williams (cello, voice), Aneirin Jones (violin, voice) and Patrick Rimes (viola, violin, voice).

Inspired by the incredible story of a time when Wales’ traditional music and dance was suppressed by Methodist chapels, and, earlier, its language by the Act of Union, VRï shed new light on a vibrant folk tradition that harnesses the raw energy of the fiddle with the finesse of the violin, and the beauty of chamber music with the joy and hedonism of a pub session, all underpinned with powerful vocal harmonies.

Un o fandiau gwerin mwyaf cyffrous Cymru sy'n rhoi gogwydd unigryw, cyfoes ar ganeuon traddodiadol. Noson o adloniant sy'n uno ysbryd sesiwn dafarn â pherfformiadau cerddorol dawnus.

Enillwyr Albwm Gorau Gwobrau Gwerin Cymru ddwywaith (albwm debut Tŷ Ein Tadau (2019) ac islais a genir 2022), VRï yw Jordan Price Williams (sielo, llais), Aneirin Jones (feiolin, llais) a Patrick Rimes (feiola, feiolin, llais).

Wedi’u hysbrydoli gan stori anhygoel cyfnod pan gafodd cerddoriaeth a dawns draddodiadol Cymru eu darostwng gan gapeli’r Methodistiaid, ac, yn gynharach, ei hiaith gan y Ddeddf Uno, mae VRï yn taflu goleuni newydd ar draddodiad gwerin bywiog sy’n harneisio egni amrwd y ffidil gyda cheinder y feiolin, a phrydferthwch cerddoriaeth siambr gyda llawenydd a phleserau sesiwn mewn tafarn, gyda harmonïau lleisiol pwerus yn sail i’r cyfan.

Roedd Will Roberts yn un o arlunwyr blaenllaw yr ugeinfed ganrif. Ynghyd a’i gyfaill a chyfoeswr Kyffin Williams, roedd ei waith yn dominyddu’r byd celf o’r 1950au nes ei farwolaeth yn 2000. Mae’n bosib i weld ei luniau siarcol yn Eglwys Dewi Sant, Castell Nedd, lle bu’n byw am y rhan fwyaf o’i oes. Roedd yn adnabyddus ac yn uchel ei barch gan bawb yn y dref.

A talk and discussion celebrating the colourful and decorative stained glass windows found at St. Thomas church will be given by Mr. Robert H. R. Williams, the church warden. Special attention will be given to two windows; the memorial window to Donald Richard Coleman by artist Elizabeth Edmunson in 1992 and the Showman window, also by the artist in 1994. Both are highly colourful and have a strong connection with Neath through their imagery. The Showman window is connected with the annual town fair. The Donald Coleman window celebrates the life of one Neath's notable MPs, who had great enthusiasm for the natural world and the Houses of Parliament.

This will be followed by a musical recital from Allegro. Allegro are a Neath based choir founded in 2016 by Musical Director Rhian Lloyd. They meet weekly and enjoy singing a varied repertoire with something to please everyone. They have an Annual and Christmas Concert but also sing at weddings, charity events and corporate events.

Exhibiting her work in the church will be Sonia Hawking who is based in Neath and is a talented and exciting architectural stained glass artist. She designs and makes stained glass windows in her studio on Croft Road. She will demonstrate her glass-making skills following the musical recital. You can see in her work on “thestudioneath” on Instagram.

Euron Griffith has lied to David Cassidy, seen his dreams of pop stardom being torn to shreds (quite literally) by the crowds at Glastonbury, and found himself at the wrong end of a shotgun…

An avid music fan from a young age, Euron’s memoir A Casual Life is centred around six particularly memorable band T-shirts owned by Griffith as he grew older (but not necessarily wiser).

From the disastrous first (and last) gig by his debut band, through to his eventual deal with a major label, from life growing up in pre-internet north Wales (when even pop radio couldn’t make it past the mountains) to the smoky clubs of Soho, this is a story of how music gets into the soul and how it helps us cope with all life throws our way.

Mae Euron Griffith wedi dweud celwyddau wrth David Cassidy, wedi gweld ei freuddwydion o fod yn seren bop gael e chwalu (yn llythrennol) gan y dorf yn Glastonbury, ac wedi cael ei fygwth gan ddryll…

Ffan o gerddoriaeth gyfoes o oedran ifanc, mae llyfr Euron A Casual Life yn archwilio perthynas yr awdur gyda chwech crys-T cofiadwy wisgodd Euron dros y blynyddoedd.

Yn cychwyn gyda gig trychinebus cyntaf (ac olaf) ei fand cyntaf ac yna’n olrhain y daith at ennill cytundeb recordio, mae’r llyfr yn adrodd hanes Euron yn tyfu i fyny yn y gogledd yn y dyddiau cyn y we (pan nad oedd hyd yn oed y signal radio yn teithio heibio’r mynyddoedd) a’i ddyddiau’n mynychu clybiau llawn mw gyn Soho. Dyma hanes sut mae cerddoriaeth yn treiddio i’n enaid ni a’n harwain ni drwy’r dyddiau du.

Gemma June Howell reads from her new novel The Crazy Truth and talks about this gut-punching tribute to the reality of life in post-industrial south Wales.

In 1984, Girlo Wolf is born into a world of pickets and poverty. Life on The Rock is precious, but growing-up is far from easy. Struggling with life-long mental health challenges and the repercussions of childhood trauma, she falls into a dark underworld of sex, drugs and alcohol.

The writer reads from his new short story collection Men Alone and discusses his life as a writer which has taken him from London to Türkiye to Wales.

Men Alone is a debut collection of audacious, darkly wry and compassionate short stories. Driven by universal themes of desire, mortality, loss and yearning, each story evokes both the melancholy and the hope inherent in all stages of life, from childhood through to maturity.

Bydd yr awdur yn darllen o'i lyfr ac yn sôn am fywyd sydd wedi cael ei fyw yn Llundain, Twrci a Cymru.

Casgliad cyntaf o straeon byrion beiddgar, tywyll, doniol a thrugarog yw Men Alone. Wedi eu gyrru gan themâu cyffredinol megis angerdd, marwoldeb, colled a hiraeth, mae pob stori’n adlewyrchu’r lledf a gobaith sy’n perthyn i bob rhan o fywyd, o blentyndod i henaint.
